The Law of Life

time stoppedThe wonderful writer Anne Lamott says that when a lot of things break at once, it is to protect something big and lovely that is trying to get itself born. I believe this, and also believe that when our energy frequencies undergo a sudden, profound shift—one that doesn’t resonate with our current circumstances—things break, especially things that channel energy overtly.

Yesterday a friend told me he was leaving New York, and as I walked through my apartment every lightbulb blew out, my favorite lamp broke, and a clock I’ve had for twenty years fell off my dressing room wall and shattered glass over my clothes, makeup, jewelry. At first I chalked it up to my earlier boasting and to the Carrie moments that are business as usual for we witches. But I had to admit this level of carnage was a bit much for ten minutes of an otherwise-ordinary Wednesday afternoon. So I tried to be a sea goat Capricorn rather than a mountain goat Capricornsea goat–accept the revelation rather than fight the change. I meditated in that mess for as long as I could take it, breathed deeply, listened closely, honored the energies and emotions that had ransacked my home to get noticed. I started laughing that my resistance had stopped time, at least when it came to that clock. Finally I started crying about what I had not wished to grieve. Here is one takeaway: Change happens to those who refuse to make it themselves.

"All, everything I understand, I understand only because I love."
