A Goddaughter Speaks: Delia’s Poem

By far, my favorite Christmas present this year came from Delia, my 13-year-old goddaughter. A week before the holiday, she called from Boston (yes, a tween used a phone!) to ask a bunch of questions about my shared childhood with her mother for a school project. Then, on Christmas day, she sent me this poem, which she said was the real motivation for all her questions. I was so impressed with both her delivery system and the poem itself that I felt inspired to share it here. I’d think she was a wonderful writer even if I didn’t love her so much. Continue Reading →

Not Just Another Day on the IRT

Mercury retrograde begins tomorrow and will last through January 25. This round, it’s taking place in know-it-all Capricorn and big-ideas Aquarius, which means that it’ll be a better time for making plans than executing them–and a generally terrible time for clear, direct communication. Back up your electronics, make contingency plans, slow down (make even get a reading), and above all, don’t blame everything–especially your transgressions–on Mercury Retrograde, which gets an unnecessarily bad rap. I find these periods an excellent time to hole up with a book, a fireplace, a brand-new notebook, and our personal connection to the divine intelligence of, well, everything.

Slogans Make a Girl Slap-Happy

Since I was a kid, I’ve given every year a little slogan. “1980, You’re a Lady.” (What can I say? I was very young.) “1988, You’re Gonna Be Great.” (It was the ’80s, man.) “1999, Prince Is Still Fine.” (Duh.) “2005, Just Stay Alive.” (That was a tough year.) “2006, Plenty of Dicks.” (That was a salacious year.) I might as well have made last year’s slogan, “2015, Don’t Be So Mean.” (I actually made it “Keep It Lean” because I was so broke the year before.) And this year’s slogan is–drumroll, please— “Sweeeeet 2016.” Are you ready, Freddy?
