I will not fast for Yom Kippur–the older I get, the less capable I am of such gestures–but I will cast my sins into the sea tomorrow. I find it so much easier to atone when I feel her eternal, unconditional love. This year I feel compelled not only to reckon for my failures as an individual but as a citizen of one of the most dangerously fraught countries in the world. Even those who are not Jewish may embrace this holiday as an invitation to do better. G’mar tov.
