May Day in All Its Glorious Glory

Happy, happy May Day!

Neruda said: “You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep spring from coming.” This applies especially to this holiday, whose glory is not even diminished by the COVID-19 and Capitalism viruses. Indeed, this entire month is one of abundance, creativity, and divine feminine magic.

May Day—and all of Taurus season—also honors the power of real work. So it makes perfect sense that today is also International Workers’ Day. I send love and gratitude to all in service, especially our essential workers. May we support those on the front lines every way we can—including by striking. And while our land, our lives, our economy shifts is shifting from transactional to reciprocal, may we find ways to activate our best selves as well, ideally by finding and developing our individual callings.

To clear that path, beautify a corner of your homestead. Clean out something that’s needed to go for a while. Dance in lovely clothes (or none at all) to music that really moves you. Rub rose and lavender oil in your hair and on your skin. Drink wine!

The Essential Resources of New Moon in Taurus

New moon in Taurus tonight with Sun in the same sign means practical magic abounds. This bull isn’t into drama and showy displays so much as cozy luxury and vital resources. So what kind of goals should we set for the next four weeks? Keeping in mind that this moon is conjuncting shit-stirrer Uranus on Earth Day, this is a good time to reevaluate what we’ve been defining as essential all along. What essentials are actually empty-calorie luxuries when you consider how they impact our planet and those who make and distribute them? What essentials and essential rights do you take for granted but others still lack? And what essentials and essential rights have you feared demanding though they’re clearly your right? It’s heavy stuff for sure, but since Taurus is as powerful as she is gentle, every small adjustment and stance you make now will have a lasting positive impact. This month to come is all bout slow-moving grace.

Today marks the beginning of Taurus season and Taurus is the change we need to see in the world. Ruled by Venus, the goddess of loving resources, this sign’s calling card is practical magic—the miracle that naturally transpires when we move faithfully into the unknown no matter what we fear and what troubles we carry. Taurus understands that to bloom, we must first dig deep—into the earth, into ourselves, into all that is buried.

Taurus can be thought of as lazy, but she merely refuses to expend precious resources on undeserving outlets. Above all, Taurus refuses to be rushed. She has her own time—not unlike quarantime—and takes however long is necessary to do a job not just right but beautifully.

On this first day of Taurus’s time to shine, consider what tasks we are still asking ourselves to complete. Do they confer compassion, concrete care, and/or joy? If not, maybe they’re not as necessary as we thought.

This is my favorite time of the year, one of gentle, gorgeous growth that not even a pandemic can touch.
