I was so sure that because Mercury retrograde was taking place mostly in my sun sign of old-soul Capricorn, I’d sidestep the normal MR shuffle-kerfuffle. Then a gig I’ve had for 16 years came to an abrupt end and much-needed checks from another employer got über-delayed and, well, you get the picture. Lean times. Cappies love cash more than almost anybody so it only makes sense that this retrograde would stop the green from flowing. But just when I was thinking, well, isn’t this the worst kind of Saturnine lesson, a beautiful money candle showed up in the mail from a bruja in my home state of Massholia—witch central, don’t you know—and right after I lit it I received a lead to end all leads. Did you sense my troubles? I texted my witchy pal and she texted back, I just thought this candle lived with you. That’s Mercury retrograde in Capricorn in a nutshell: You don’t get what you want but you do get what you need. Let’s see what shows up in tomorrow’s mail. At that, let’s see what happens now that lady Venus is entering Pisces–it’ll either swallow up our new oligarchy with big juicy love or we’ll all get too sensitive to move. (Probably both.)

I don’t do New Years because celebrating changes in the Christian calendar is not my cuppa tea and because my personal new year begins in three weeks anyway. But I send you light and love because I always do and because these last 12 months have been mere preparation for the coming revolution. 2017 is the year we’re going to create the world we’re meant to inherit. Pictured here: me, at 8, already fighting the good fight.
New Moon, Old Goat
Tonight we usher in a new moon in Capricorn, just as we land at the midpoint of Mercury retrograde in the same sign. This is an opportunity to set soul goals—nothing pedestrian, mind you, but the deepest shit, the common denominator of our many incarnations, the stuff we were put on Earth this time around to accomplish. Questions to ask: What do my head and heart agree I should do? How am I best of service? Cardinal Capricorn is the make-it-happen-captain energy, and with Sun, Moon, and Mercury retrograde currently in this sign, it’s high time to figure out how to put your meaning where your money is—or at least your money where your mouth is. Enjoy the vibration, because god knows you have no choice but to submit to its ancient, Saturnine lessons. As a Capricorn with an appreciation for the absurd, I love this moment madly. So the brilliant witch Cat Cabral and I read each other’s cards and called each other’s bluff among a swoon of roasted chicken, vino, candles, and a certain overfamiliar presiding for good measure. This is how you walk the Cappie talk: Embrace your coven, release what doesn’t shine on your celestial frequency, and, for heaven’s sake, say it, don’t spray it.
