Mercury Retrotrades, and Boy Does It Ever

Woof! I spent the last 36 hours in tech hell and framily heaven. First I dropped my Airpods in the bathtub, and managed to recover them only through the magic of a Youtube tutorial and my hairdryer. Then my Macbook completely died–and lest this passive voice seem suspicious, trust me when I say a jar of dill pickles sailed out of a cabinet and landed on said Macbook with the might of a thousand dybbuks. With it died 11 months of writing because I hadn’t been properly backing up since Covid began.

Note that I’m not defending my sloppiness; merely reporting it with no small measure of chagrin.

But as frustrating as the breakdown of my devices has been, things could be so much worse. I am beyond lucky to have such lovely, generous, patient friends willing to share their amazing range of skills and savvy and resources with me, and I am grateful for this reminder. Not to mention: This kerfuffle comes right on time because Mercury retrograde begins tomorrow, enforcing the break we all need from our 11-month reliance on tech since it is taking place in Aquarius, which rules technology and networking.

Retrogrades tend to be most disruptive at their beginnings and ends, so over the next two days and from February 19-21, all things transportation and telecommunication may get especially fritzy. The good news? This forced reboot will also reboot our overtaxed, completely traumatized central nervous systems.

So why not lean in? Yes: it’s extremely annoying that our phones, tablets, computers, wifi and cable connections, and social media will likely go on the fritz over the next three weeks. But during this time, give yourself permission to unplug as much as you want. “Just say no” to Zoom. Sketch. Make music. Go for walks. And nap whenever you wish.

When we let them, Mercury Retrogrades enable us to more deeply connect with ourselves and each other. As my man Obi-Wan is wont to say: Trust the Force, Luke.

Astro PSA: Full Moon in Cancer

Most of us are spending this week between Christmas and New Years in our PJs, and tonight’s full moon in its home sign of homebody Cancer supports this impulse. But Capricorn season is always about reality checks, and with both the Sun and Moon conjuncting Chiron, the Wounded Healer, don’t be surprised if issues around intimacy and domestic stability come up to be healed. Honor whatever discordance you experience, because this last full moon of a truly heartbreaking year is here to help us release our impediments to true compassion and peace. So howl your heartbreaks at the moon, drop them in the water, maybe even burn them on a piece of a paper. All that matters is you make room for bigger and better love because that’s how we’re all going to heal in the year to come. As Alice Walker says: The way forward is with a broken heart.

O Holiest of Nights

All hail winter solstice–the longest night pierced by the greatest light. This is truly the most magical day of the year, for to find our way out of such looming darkness we must move deeper into the unknown—trust what we can’t see, can’t touch. This is the embodiment of faith, and when we open to its embrace new worlds open up. Miracles, in fact. Early Christians chose to celebrate Jesus’ birthday this time of year not only to colonize pagan celebrations (oy) but because they recognized that when the sunlight is sparsest and the earth most barren, we most need the faith that creates something from nothing. The faith that granted Mary her immaculate birth, that kept the oil burning for eight days for the Maccabees. It is the same faith that reminds us love can subsume even the worst of black holes. Here, at this turning point, on this holiest day in this unholiest of years, we are in dire need of such faith. And the Universe is meeting us halfway, with the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn igniting us all as one extraordinary star in the heavens. We must listen, we must light, and we must love. All my heart to each of yours.
